Long Departed Landscapes

Elisa Markes-Young

A visitor to The Slow Infinity of Dreaming (2004) said that the work reminded them of Polish folklore. To Elisa it was a very surprising comment as the series dealt with the Australian landscape.

Elisa remembered this remark while working on What I Am (2006) - a series that made her think a lot about where she's from. Around the same time her brother visited Poland for the first time since they left the country and sent her countless photographs he took in Krakow.

All this led to the idea of Long Departed Landscapes - a series in which Elisa is trying to recreate the colours and the feeling of the place as she remembers it. It's influenced by the patterns of Polish folklore costumes and old embroideries and the feel of the pieces is somewhat 'idyllic'... But that's how one often remembers old childhood landscapes.
